What Todd Boehly must give Graham Potter at Chelsea that Thomas Tuchel didn't get

Todd Boehly's decision to sack Thomas Tuchel was a brutal one. Despite claiming the Champions League, Club World Cup and reaching a number of domestic finals, his reign at Stamford Bridge lasted just 19 months.

A problem often highlighted throughout the Roman Abramovich era was managers at Chelsea not getting enough time in the hot seat, and some have pointed to Tuchel's sacking as following that trend, despite the new ownership. Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin hopes that the harsh hire and fire policy will end following the appointment of Graham Potter.

Potter's five-year contract in west London suggests that Boehly very much sees his appointment as a long-term project. However, you have to go all the way back to 1967 to find the last Chelsea boss who lasted more than five years in the job, when Dave Sexton spent seven years in the Stamford Bridge hot seat.

Chelsea's target is to compete on multiple fronts and to win silverware regularly, but Nevin hopes that the club see the bigger picture when it comes to Potter's appointment, stressing that the 47-year-old needs to be given time to 'build a new ethos'.

"I can’t wait to see how he implements his ideas, as those methods have been liked, respected and fairly successful everywhere he has been," Nevin told the Chelsea website. "Now he will have to get rid of that little word, ‘fairly’, as the expectations at Chelsea are very high indeed.

“What would be good, is if he and his staff are treated fairly themselves. It takes some time to build a football team, it takes a bit longer to build a new ethos at a club. The club has had an obvious philosophy for the past two decades, and that has been win, win and win again. That will still be there, but I look forward to seeing what Graham brings on top of that.”
