What to expect when IKEA opens first ever high-street store next month

It's the DIY store that has become infamous among shoppers for its large showrooms and vast amount of products.

But IKEA, the Swedish flat-pack furniture giant, will soon be opening up a new store in the UK that will look a little different to any of its other stores.

IKEA has confirmed it will be opening up a brand new store in Hammersmith, West London on February 24 and it will feature a completely new concept.

The first-of-its-kind store will introduce a mall-concept and it will be the first time that shoppers can purchase some of the brands iconic products from the high street.

While the opening of the new store is still just over four weeks away, the DIY giant has released some images showcasing the new format which gives an idea of what to expect.

With 4,600 sqm worth of space, the new store will be set across two floors and will feature room spaces inspired by London and urban living.

It will be complete with a free-flowing layout where shoppers can browse 4,000 of IKEA's product lines which will be located next to the roomsets they represent, rather than their traditional market-hall roomset.

And that's not all, as the new store will also launch a new Swedish deli that will be exclusive only to the new Hammersmith store.

That means that shoppers can tuck into the iconic Swedish meatballs and other hot and cold items inspired by their Swedish roots, such as Smörrebröd open sandwiches, Nordic Chicken Caesar and Swedish Mazarin.

The new deli will also offer shoppers a brand new 'grab and go' option for busy commuters by opening an hour earlier at 8am on weekdays.

Peter Jelkeby, Country Retail Manager and Chief Sustainability Officer at IKEA UK & Ireland said: "“As shopping habits evolve and city centres continue to be redefined in the wake of the pandemic, this new store format marks the next step in our business transformation as we strive to make IKEA more accessible, affordable and sustainable

He added, "“For the first time, Londoners will be able to take the tube to an IKEA store, pop in, grab a yellow bag and buy all the home furnishing accessories that make a house a home. They will also be able to explore the whole range, for delivery to a convenient collection point or directly to their home."

Designed with sustainability in mind, the new store has already achieved a a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating, as well as being easily accessible via public transport from 68 bus routes and four tube lines.

Shoppers will also be able to access the popular Buy Back service via a a small circular hub that will allow them to trade in selected used furniture for vouchers to be spent in-store.

The new Hammersmith London store will open on at 10am on Thursday, February 24.
