Chelsea’s transfers have been blockbuster since they were taken over last summer and it promises to be an exciting few days leading into deadline day.
Not content with 17 signings over two transfer windows for over £470million, the Blues still want a central midfielder.
It will likely see Chelsea become the first team in history to spend over half a billion in a single season, dispelling fears that the free-spending days are over post-Roman Abramovich.
Top priority
A central midfielder has been a priority for some time but, even amid all their spending, finding an option has proved to be hard.
West Ham captain Declan Rice increasingly prefers a move to Arsenal, Amadou Onana has rejected an approach from Chelsea and deals cannot be struck with Benfica or Brighton for Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.
Convincing Onana is seemingly the idea now but that could change in the next few days.
Arsenal are currently trying to steal a march for Caicedo with an improved bid in excess of £60m expected.
What else do they need
It is hard to say a bloated 33-man squad needs any particular option but, whenever Reece James is injured, Chelsea drop points.
They need a good alternative option at right-back and 19-year-old defender Malo Gusto has now joined, though will complete the season on loan at Lyon.
Christopher Nkunku is also set to join in the summer after a deal was agreed with RB Leipzig.
Possible ins
Onana, Gusto and maybe some signings for the academy teams. But it is impossible to rule anything out with this Chelsea recruitment team.
Possible outs
Graham Potter will be dealing with unregistering players from his Champions League squad after the transfer window unless the Blues sell some stars.
That could lead to a cut-price exit for Hakim Ziyech, who is attracting interest from AC Milan, Roma and Everton. Ruben Loftus-Cheek has admirers but is reluctant to leave.
Conor Gallagher is similarly reluctant to leave on loan but he could be allowed to join Crystal Palace, while Datro Fofana, Cesare Casadei and Omari Hutchinson could all find temporary homes.
