What to do with Scottish paper £20 and £50 notes as expiry date looms

Scottish paper banknotes are being taken out of circulation as Polymer becomes more popular due to its longevity.

The latest notes to be withdrawn from use are paper £20 and £50 notes issued by Bank of Scotland, Clydesdale Bank, and Royal Bank of Scotland, with the cut-off point being October 1. This coincides with Bank of England's paper notes which can no longer be used as legal tender from September 30.

The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) state on their website that unlike Bank of England, paper notes are still considered legal but businesses and shops may no longer be obliged to accept the paper notes from that date. If they do accept them, it will be at the discretion of the business.

You can swap old paper notes in your bank branch with Bank of Scotland accepting deposits from its customers of paper notes issued by any Scottish bank, and exchange them for both customers and non-customers

Clydesdale Bank will swap all Scottish banknotes for its own customers with a £250 allowance for non-customers.

Royal Bank of Scotland will exchange and accept paper note deposits from customers and exchange notes for non-customers too.

If you want to swap notes at the Post Office, you need to check that your bank is signed up to receive cash deposits. The Post Office will then deposit the money into your account which you can then withdraw.

RBS explains that customers can swap old coins and notes for newer ones.

They state: "As a Royal Bank of Scotland Bank customer you can swap, or deposit into your account, out of circulation coins/notes and replace them with new ones.

"All Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster banknotes (as with all Scottish and Northern Irish banknotes) remain legal currency, will not be withdrawn from circulation in the same way as the Bank of England notes, and have no end date for acceptance."

A spokesperson from Bank of Scotland told Glasgow Live: "On September 30 2022 Bank of Scotland will withdraw paper £20 and £50 bank notes. The paper notes have been replaced with Polymer versions which are already in circulation.

"After September 30 2022 Bank of Scotland customers can still deposit Bank of Scotland £20 and £50 paper bank notes into their Bank of Scotland account.

"People who are not customers of Bank of Scotland can visit a Bank of Scotland branch and exchange Bank of Scotland paper £20 and £50 notes to Polymer versions, up to a value of £250."
