What to do if your Ryanair flight is cancelled or changed as airline warns of delays

Airports and airlines have told customers to prepare for possible delays as travel providers see a surge of holidaymakers following the pandemic.

Budget airline Ryanair have already warned people to expect delays following a dispute over pay.

A number of airlines, including easyJet and British Airways, have had to cancel or reschedule flights over a shortage a staff and airports around the UK have been large queues at check-in and at security.

If your Ryanair flight is cancelled or rescheduled, it is important to know what to do and what your rights are.

As explained by citizen's advice, you have the legal right to either:

  • A full refund - including other flights from the airline that you won’t use in the same booking such as onward or return flights
  • A replacement flight to get you to your destination.

According to Ryanair's website, "Occasionally, due to unforeseen circumstances, we may have to change flight timings before scheduled departure. If this happens, we will notify you of the schedule change via e-mail. The change will also be reflected in your trip details under the “My Bookings” section in your myRyanair account.

"You will be entitled to a full refund of all amounts you have paid to us in connection with that flight, if:

  • We change the scheduled departure time by at least 5 hours.
  • This is unacceptable to you.
  • And we cannot book you on an alternative flight which is acceptable to you."

If your flight is cancelled, you will be contacted by Ryanair by email or text. You can also check the flight status of your flight on their website by selecting the route or flight number.

Ryanair adds: "We deeply regret the inconvenience of flight cancellations and we’ll try our best to minimise the impact of these disruptions.

"If your flight is cancelled there are two options available to you to choose from. You can either apply for a refund or change your cancelled flight for free."

Ryanair is encouraging customers to arrive at the airport in plenty of time. The airline Bag Drop desk opens two hours before the flight is scheduled to depart and close 40 minutes before.

Ryanair emphasises: "It’s important that you make it to your boarding gate in good time, at least 30 minutes before your flight departure time.

"Boarding closes 20 minutes before departure. Please have your valid travel document and boarding pass ready at the boarding gate."
