What to do if your Edinburgh Airport British Airways flight is cancelled

More travel woes are on the horizon for holidaymakers, as British Airways announced it is to cancel hundreds more flights this summer.

Following that, a number of BA flights from Heathrow Airport to and from Edinburgh were cancelled on Monday at short notice as the airport in London couldn't handle the surge of customers. General of the International Air Transport Association Willie Walsh has since added that he believes air travel will become more expensive as the price of oil rises.

British Airways said back in May they were rescheduling 10 per cent of flights between April and October this year and, now with the latest additions, this brings it up to 11 per cent.

The airline said: "We took pre-emptive action earlier this year to reduce our summer schedule to provide customers with as much notice as possible about any changes to their travel plans. As the entire aviation industry continues to face into the most challenging period in its history, regrettably it has become necessary to make some further reductions.

"We're in touch with customers to apologise and offer to rebook them or issue a full refund."

If your flight is affected by the stack of cancellations, here's all you need to know.

How to check if your British Airways flight is cancelled

You can look out for last-minute cancellations by using the British Airways travel checker. You can check the status of your flight in three different ways using the travel checker.

Input either the route, flight number or airport into the travel checker before you head to the airport, in case your flight has been hit by cancellations.

British Airways states on its website: "We'll do everything we can to help get your travel plans back on track. Below are the options available to you, as well as how to re-book a flight, find a hotel room, claim compensation if you're eligible and more.

"We’ll be in touch as quickly as we can if your flight is delayed or cancelled – so be sure to update your details on Manage My Booking if your contact information changes."

Check your flight status with Edinburgh Airport

You can check your flight status on the day with Edinburgh Airport using their Live Flight Checker.

If your flight is cancelled, you need to get in touch with your airline.

What are your rights if your flight is cancelled?

According to Citizen's Advice, you have the legal right to either:

  • A full refund - including other flights from the airline that you won’t use in the same booking such as onward or return flights
  • A replacement flight to get you to your destination.
