What to do if your British Gas smart meter is faulty or showing an abnormal reading

British Gas customers have been complaining of 'faulty' smart meters that display larger than normal readings - or no readings at all.

Frustrated customers have been speaking to The Mirror about their British Gas smart meter struggles with claims of them not working, showing large readings, and frustrations over not understanding the problem or being able to get it sorted quickly.

Jamie Watkinson-Harvey described British Gas smart meters as "simply not fit for purpose" and told The Mirror one meter even claimed he was using £2,400 per day.

Charlotte, who described herself as a "disgruntled" customer, says she has experienced issues with her smart meter since February.

Another customer, who wished to stay anonymous, told The Mirror: "Both my gas and electric are supplied by British Gas. My smart meter stopped working as of the March 26.

"Unfortunately no engineer available until the July 14."

With many reporting issues with their smart meters and looking for answers, we have looked at what British Gas advise.

If your meter isn't working

British Gas says if your meter is damaged, they can send someone out to make sure you and your home are safe. You can call their Pay as you go enquiries line which is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm for general enquiries and 24 hours a day, seven days a week for emergencies.

If you don't have a pay as you go meter you can call the energy company's Account enquiries line.

What if my meter's damaged?

If you think your meter is damaged, you are advised to immediately get in touch with the Gas Emergency Services.

If you notice any sparking, smoking or burning coming from your meter, British Gas says you should ring the fire brigade.

Turn off all your appliances and call your local electricity distributor.

What if my meter reading hasn't changed, or is going backwards?

This could mean your meter is recording your energy usage incorrectly.

If you have a pay as you go meter call the Pay as you go enquiries line as soon as possible to make sure you are only paying for what you have used.

If you don't have a pay as you go meter call the Account enquiries line.
