What Timo Werner did after breaking Chelsea goal drought amid Borussia Dortmund interest

Timo Werner barely celebrated his goal in Chelsea’s comeback victory against Luton Town on Wednesday as questions continue to swirl regarding his future.

The German striker has not found life easy since completing a switch to Stamford Bridge last season.

He scored just 12 goals in his first season following a big-money arrival from RB Leipzig, whilst ahead of the trip to Kenilworth Road, he had only managed to bag six in all competitions throughout the current campaign.

However, he got back to form in impressive style after he latched onto Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s long pass to score before then setting up Romelu Lukaku for the winning goal as Chelsea booked their place in the quarter-finals for the third season in a row.

It was Werner’s goal - his first in nearly two months - that was the most intriguing though, with the German forward cutting a somewhat forlorn figure after he managed to find the back of the net.

After slotting home, he appeared to turn around in bemusement before then jogging back to the centre circle.

Whilst most will argue that his response could simply be to do with the fact that Chelsea were chasing a winning goal, the circumstances around Werner finding the net are intriguing, with the German down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and having proven himself in the Bundesliga in the past.

Sky Germany have reported that Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing the striker this summer as they attempt to find a potential replacement for Erling Haaland, who looks set to leave the club.

Before arriving in west London, Werner had managed to score 95 goals in 159 appearances for Leipzig - a huge reason behind his move to Chelsea.

Intriguingly, Werner has already dropped a hint that he would be open to returning to the Bundesliga - but not with Dortmund.

Speaking in 2018, he said: "If you take Germany, it would be a lie to say that you would not like to play for Bayern.”
