What time is the King's coronation ceremony and when is BBC's Coronation Concert?

The Coronation of King Charles III is fast approaching. The official ceremony is on Saturday, May 6 at Westminster Abbey after the royals arrive in procession from Buckingham Palace, you can read more about the schedule here.

However, the whole weekend will be one big celebration with BBC's Coronation Concert taking place on Sunday, May 7 at Windsor Castle while Monday, May 8 will mark an extra bank holiday and also The Big Help Out, which is is planned to be the biggest volunteering event of 2023.

While many are expected to travel to London to catch a glimpse of the actual coronation, you can see the full timeline including routes and maps here, many will attend street parties or take part in events within their local community. But what time is the ceremony and when is BBC's Coronation Concert? Here's all the important timings of the weekend.

What time is King Charles's coronation?

The coronation of King Charles III and Camilla, the Queen Consort will take place on Saturday, May 6. The service will take place at Westminster Abbey at 11am. The King and Queen Consort Camilla will arrive at Westminster Abbey in procession from Buckingham Palace, known as The King’s Procession.

Those hoping to catch a glimpse in person can watch the coronation processions through London in person at viewing areas along the procession route, on both sides of The Mall and Whitehall. The viewing areas will be open from 6am. You can see the recommended stations to get to viewing areas here.

Coverage of the coronation will kick off on BBC One and BBC Two at 10:15am, although you can tune into the preparations from 7:30am. On ITV coverage starts at 8:30am.

After the service, there will be a larger ceremonial procession, known as The Coronation Procession with the couple joined by other members of the Royal Family. The procession from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace, The Coronation Procession, will be much larger in scale, taking the same route in reverse.

When is BBC's Coronation Concert?

On Sunday, 7 May 2023, a unique Coronation Concert will take place at Windsor Castle to celebrate the coronation. The Coronation Concert will bring music icons and contemporary stars together in celebration of the historic occasion.

For BBC Television and iPlayer, Kirsty Young will return to anchor the special live broadcast, this time within the grounds of Windsor Castle, where the concert will take place that evening on the castle’s East Lawn. The Coronation Concert will be broadcast from 8pm.

Those in the line-up include Take That, international superstar Lionel Richie, global pop icon Katy Perry, international opera star Andrea Bocelli, Welsh bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel, singer/songwriter Freya Ridings, classical-soul composer/producer Alexis Ffrench, singer-songwriters Paloma Faith and Tiwa Savage, rock ‘n’ roll legend Steve Winwood, internationally renowned pianist Lang Lang and pop star Nicole Scherzinger.

While Tom Cruise, Dame Joan Collins and Disney’s Winnie the Pooh will also feature in the concert. They, along with Sir Tom Jones, Bear Grylls OBE and Oti Mabuse are amongst the stars who will appear in a series of pre-recorded sketches and segments revealing little-known facts about The King.

A centrepiece of the Coronation Concert, Lighting up the Nation, will see the country join together in celebration as iconic locations across the United Kingdom are lit up using projections, lasers, potential drone displays and illuminations. You can see Cardiff's role in the display here.
