Nicola Sturgeon is to resign as Scotland's First Minister and is today expected to make an announcement at a press conference in Edinburgh.

The 52-year-old has been in the role since 2014, becoming the first woman ever to hold the position of First Minister of Scotland.

Glasgow Live reported earlier this morning (February 15) that the leader of the Scottish National Party is expected to make the announcement at a news conference at Bute House in Edinburgh.

The Scottish Government confirmed the hastily prepared news conference earlier this morning, as rumours circulated about Sturgeon's resignation from her post.
