What time did WhatsApp go down on Tuesday?

On Tuesday morning, a high number of WhatsApp users woke up to see that they were unable to send or receive any messages from the app.

Tens of thousands of WhatsApp users reported issues with the, according to service tracker Downdetector. Before 8.30 am, more than 69,000 reports of problems with the app had come flooding in.

It appears that users first began experiencing problems with the Meta-owned messaging service just before 8am. WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps in the UK, and is even used by senior politicians - around the world, it has more than two billion users.

In a statement, a WhatsApp spokesperson said: “We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages and we’re working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible.”

It is not yet clear what has caused the messaging service to have gone down across the globe.

What makes the incident more confusing is that WhatsApp is the only Meta-owned app that went down, with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram still operating. Like other messaging apps, WhatsApp uses public cloud providers to stay online.

Despite this, all major cloud companies have not reported any issues with their service.
