Quotes corner

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard: “When you take the head coach role you have to embrace that (pressure), have to be challenged and use it as motivation. I’ll front this head on, I’m game for it.

“We won’t use any excuses or point any fingers. I always try to put context in everything. I took over at a time when confidence and belief was in a much worse place than it is now.

“They had lost five games on the spin. We haven’t done that, we have been close to wins and performed well against a Champions League team.

“I won’t be saying it’s because of injuries, I need this amount of time or another window.

“We’ll accept and take full responsibly over where we are. In the next four days, if we can find two massive performances and results, it will look very different.”

Fulham manager Marco Silva: “I’m 100 percent sure that Steven Gerrard knows how to deal with this situation, he has all the experience as a football player.

“Of course as a manager he has some experience as well in how to deal (with it). All of us in this job know that you have to enjoy (it) really, you know that people will highlight all the stuff in the tough moments.

“But our careers are so long, even if you are a young manager it’s so long. I’ve been managing more than 10 seasons already and all the good moments I had as well, I focus on that.

“All the other moments make you stronger for sure and make me better every single day and ease the pressure that I put on myself. We have to live with this pressure and this pressure that is normally behind us has to be a privilege.

“For me it is a privilege. I know for Stevie it is a privilege as well, because we love our job and we want really to challenge and be with our players and prepare our teams in the best way.”
