The next five days will define Sunderland’s season as the League One play-off race hinges on a knife-edge. Currently, in fourth spot, the Black Cats are in the driving seat to secure promotion but one slip up could prove fatal for their bid to reach the Championship.
Sunderland, Plymouth Argyle and Wycombe Wanderers are all on 90 points while Sheffield Wednesday - who are seventh - trail on 79. The latter travel to relegation-threatened Fleetwood for their game in hand tomorrow night and could leapfrog all of the above with a win. However, Sunderland too, play an extra game tomorrow as Alex Neil’s men welcome high-flying Rotherham to the Stadium of Light.
To put it in layman’s terms, the Black Cats and Wednesday have six points to play for whereas Plymouth and Wycombe only have three. Victory in either of Sunderland’s final two games - the other being Morecambe away on Saturday - should be enough to book their play-off berth.
Argyle host third-placed MK Dons at the weekend and Wycombe travel to mid-table Burton Albion. Barring disaster, Sunderland should take confidence in the fact the promotion race is very much in their hands.
The Black Cats are top of the League One home table in 2021-22 and another win at the Stadium of Light tomorrow would go a huge way to ensuring a spot in next month’s play-offs. If Sunderland win tomorrow and Sheffield Wednesday lose then they will secure their play-off spot with one game to spare.
