Graeme Souness has questioned whether Rangers fans would take Steven Gerrard back after he left them at a 'difficult time'.
Former Liverpool captain Gerrard has been tipped for a sensational return to the Ibrox, after the Scottish giants confirmed this morning that his original successor Giovanni van Bronckhorst would leave the club after a poor run of form. The Dutchman's side had won just two of their last seven matches in all competitions, seeing them knocked out of the Champions League at the group stages and nine points behind leaders Celtic in the Scottish Premier League.
Gerrard left Rangers for the Premier League and Aston Villa last November, but an underwhelming 11 months in which the former Reds midfielder failed to get the best out of his squad saw him sacked in October. He had previously guided the Scottish side to an unbeaten league campaign and a first SPL title in 10 years during the 2020/2021 season, but Souness has questioned whether he would be welcomed back to the Ibrox.

"I saw Steven a couple of weeks ago in Portugal," Souness told TalkSPORT. "He seemed in fine form and I said to him: 'are you wanting to go back?' and he said give it a bit of time and I'll go back if something comes along that is interesting to him, back into the game.
"I don't see him going to Glasgow Rangers. Would the supporters be happy with him going back? I'm not sure. They think he left them at a difficult time, I'm not sure."
Gerrard has long been touted to eventually succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, but a poor 11-month showing at Villa Park has damaged his managerial reputation somewhat. The Midlands club had won two of their 11 league games under Gerrard this season.
