What Spurs manager Antonio Conte has said about Roman Abramovich amid Chelsea sale confirmation

Current Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has previously labelled Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich as a very "passionate" man amid fresh Blues sale confirmation.

The current Lilywhites manager is under some pressure after recent losses against Burnley in the Premier League and Middlesbrough in the FA Cup. Following the defeat against Burnley, Conte even cast doubt on his future as Spurs boss.

Another man in a similar position to Conte but in a different context is Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, who has decided to end his 19-year association with the club, as he confirmed in a statement on Wednesday night ahead of the club's FA Cup tie against Luton.

It comes as the Russian oligarch was once again brought up in Parliament during Prime Minister's Questions over his links with Vladimir Putin amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

He vehemently denies any direct links to Russian president Putin but the decision announced on Saturday to sell the club has sent the rumour mill into a frenzy.

Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss is amongst a number of potential owners who could takeover, with British tycoon Sir Jim Ratcliffe also on the list alongside American businessman Todd Boehly and many others who are currently in the running.

It is expected that Abramovich is looking to drub up a bidding war, as per the Independent, to ensure that the most interested party has the right intentions when purchasing a club that has done so well since the Russian's takeover in 2023.

Wyss told Blick: "[Abramovich] wants to get rid of Chelsea quickly. I and three other people received an offer on Tuesday to buy Chelsea from Abramovich.

"I have to wait four to five days now. Abramovich is currently asking far too much. You know, Chelsea owe him £2billion [it is £1.5billion]. But Chelsea has no money. That means: those who buy Chelsea should compensate Abramovich.

"As of today, we don't know the exact selling price. I can well imagine starting at Chelsea with partners. But I have to examine the general conditions first. But what I can already say: I'm definitely not doing something like this alone. If I buy Chelsea, then with a consortium consisting of six to seven investors."

It is understood that around eight parties are currently in the running to take on the responsibility of leading the club through their next chapter post-Abramovich and one person who knew the Russian well was Conte.

The Italian has provided the owner with two of the 21 trophies won since 2023 during his turbulent two-season stay in west London, which ended in a bitter way with a bust up between his representatives and the board over pay-out issues.

Nonetheless, when it was going all rosy and well for the fiery Italian at Stamford Bridge, his three at the back revolution in English football resulted in Chelsea's latest Premier League win in 2016/17 and their latest FA Cup victory in 2017/18.

After reflecting on his turbulent time in SW6, Conte only had good things to say about a man he labelled as 'very passionate' for his football.

"I keep good memories with Chelsea, the club, with Mr Abramovich, who is a very passionate man for his football," he said to The Telegraph in an interview back in 2020.

"It was incredible, especially in my first season, because he [Abramovich] was very, very close to me, asking about my football and my ideas.

"Many times he came to the training ground to meet me and I remember he wanted to watch the video about our game and about our preparation – the way we wanted to face the opponent.

"I think in my career, he was one of the most passionate men about football and I keep good memories about him and about the club, an important club in the world."
