What Spurs chiefs 'told summer transfer targets about Liverpool' in bid to complete deals

Tottenham Hotspur transfer chiefs outlined a vision of usurping Liverpool and Manchester City in the next two to three years to their summer signings, according to a new report.

Antonio Conte's side spent big during the transfer window, recruiting the likes of Cristian Romero, Richarlison and Yves Bissouma in what proved to be a successful recruitment period for the club.

Liverpool, by contrast, made Darwin Nunez their only major addition to the first-team, with teenagers Calvin Ramsay and Fabio Carvalho the other two players to join on a permanent basis.

Spurs have been left behind by both Liverpool and City in recent seasons, failing to reach the sky-high standards set by both clubs in the top flight while the pair battled it out for the Premier League crown. The current campaign is already playing out differently to how many expected, with the Reds already trailing Arsenal by 11 points.

Pep Guardiola's side have maintained their relentless form but there are clear signs the division is becoming more competitive, typified most of all by the progress made by Mikel Arteta's league leaders. Tottenham, perhaps, felt this was an inevitable reality having persuaded players to be part of the Lilywhites' project of becoming title challengers.

According to Sky Sports, the north London club were telling potential new recruits they envisage a scenario whereby Spurs are able to rise to the top of the division by 2025, pointing to a period of transition at one or both City and Liverpool as the underlying reason as to why this can be achieved.

Conte's men currently lead Liverpool by seven points and can extend this gap to 10 points, should they get the better of Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.
