What spring? Winter blast chills Canberra as temp drops to minus 7

Canberrans woke to a frosty morning, with temperatures falling to almost minus 7 degrees.

And it felt even colder: the apparent temperature dropped to minus 10.3.

It was the coldest spring morning for the national capital since records began, according to the Weatherzone website.

It comes after Australia had its second-warmest August on record.

The bureau last week warned two cold fronts were moving across Australia, bringing the icy weather with them.

Canberra's mean, or average, minimum in September is 3.1 degrees and the maximum is 17.9 degrees

Tuesday is expected to have areas of frost, and to again drop below zero, although this time to only minus 1. We should expect chilly nights for the rest of the week with temperatures falling to just above zero.

Days are tipped to top out right on average at about 18 degrees through the week, with slight chances of showers towards the end of the week and on the weekend.
