What Sir Alex Ferguson admitted to Jurgen Klopp when handing him manager of the year award

Sir Alex Ferguson made a humorous admission when presenting Jurgen Klopp with the League Managers’ Association award on Tuesday evening.

The Reds boss, who is on for a cup treble this season, beat Pep Guardiola to the prize just days after Manchester City ’s title win. The Premier League champions denied Klopp an unprecedented quadruple with their comeback against Aston Villa on Sunday.

It will have been tough for Sir Alex, and all United fans, to see their two fiercest rivals battle it out for the crown with their own club waning further down the table. And Ferguson jokingly made known the anguish he was feeling when handing over his namesake trophy over to Klopp.

“This is agony, absolute agony!” he jested. The pair had first met 12 years ago when Sir Alex advised Klopp to join a ‘club with history’.

The United hero wasn’t shy to share his regret over this, humouring: "I should have told him to go to Scunthorpe United.”

In response to the Scot’s joke, Klopp remarked: “I couldn’t understand anything he (Ferguson) said… I’ve improved through working with Robbo (Andy Robertson) and Kenny (Dalglish).”

Klopp also picked up Premier League manager of the year on the night in a double scoop.
