What should the Falcons do with cornerback A.J. Terrell?

The Atlanta Falcons are set to begin training camp in less than two weeks, with both rookies and veterans reporting on July 24. Even as we close in on the 2024 NFL preseason, there’s still time for this team to make a move.

Free agency is an option, or the Falcons could explore the trade market. The team has yet to extend former first-round pick A.J. Terrell, who’s entering the final year of his rookie contract. A long-term deal might be best for both parties, but all options should be considered if an extension isn’t in the cards.

Terrell is a fine player, and although he hasn’t gotten back to the level he played at in 2021, the former Clemson star had one of his better years in 2023. Terrell only gave up four touchdowns last season — the second-lowest total of his career — and allowed 508 yards on 76 targets.

Since the Falcons didn’t invest much in the cornerback position over the offseason, losing Terrell for nothing next year would be a major blow to this defense. Of course, just because a deal isn’t done before training camp starts doesn’t mean one can’t be worked out.

The team took two different approaches with offensive tackle Kaleb McGary and guard Chris Lindstrom last offseason, but both players still returned to Atlanta.

If the Falcons were to explore moving Terrell, what kind of value could he fetch in the final year of his deal? This part is important because for any potential trade to make sense, the Falcons would need to receive a package better than the compensatory pick given by the NFL.

While you never know what a team might be willing to offer, signing Terrell to a long-term extension arguably makes the most sense for Atlanta. He’s performed well enough through his first four seasons to warrant a deal and there isn’t a good alternative on the roster.

Any contract offered to Terrell will likely average well over $10 million per season. Plus, if we look at the deals received by Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs and Bears CB Jaylon Johnson, expect that number to be closer to $20 million per year.

Whatever happens with Terrell will undoubtedly have a major impact on the future of this Falcons football team.
