What Sergio Aguero and Pep Guardiola told Julian Alvarez about Man City transfer

Julian Alvarez sought advice from former Manchester City players before signing for the club, as he revealed details of his first conversation with new manager Pep Guardiola after sealing the transfer.

Alvarez's £14m signing was announced in January, before he was loaned back to River Plate until this week. Now en-route to Manchester, Alvarez has spoken to club media about his decision-making process when he first learned of City's interest.

As an Argentina international, Alvarez was able to turn to Sergio Aguero for advice on joining City, as well as former Blues Nicolas Otamendi and Willy Caballero.

After signalling an intention to follow in the footsteps of former City Argentinians Aguero, Pablo Zabaleta and Carlos Tevez, Alvarez said he reached out to Aguero personally to get a feel for what life would be like at the Etihad.

"As a kid I always dreamed of playing in the biggest clubs and in the best leagues," he said.

"Being able to reach the Premier League, one of the best leagues in the world, I am very excited and proud to come this far. I spoke with Willy Cabellero and Aguero and with Otamendi since we are teammates in the national team.

"We all know how important Kun was in the club and for the world too, as a club player and for the national team as well. I had the opportunity to speak with him and he told me a few things about the city, about the teammates, about Manchester City in general. I am very excited about what's to come."

Alvarez also lifted the lid on a conversation with his new manager Guardiola after his signing was confirmed in the January transfer window.

"I was able to talk to him in February when the signing was confirmed," he said.

"He welcomed me to the club I am glad to be part of the City project. He is one of the best coaches in the world, he has been in incredibly successful clubs. I want to do a good job for him, to continue growing as a footballer and as a person."
