What Senegal did after FIFA punishment ahead of England World Cup match

Senegal have responded to their fine from Football's governing body FIFA by sending out assistant manager Regis Bogaert and third-choice goalkeeper Alfred Gomis to their pre-match press conference ahead of facing England in the World Cup round of 16 on Sunday.

The African Cup on Nations winners were fined £8,700 for breaching World Cup rules ahead of their decisive 2-1 win over Ecuador that booked the African side's first ever meeting with the Three Lions.

Goals from Watford winger Ismaila Sarr and Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly either side of an equaliser from Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo saw Senegal progress to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time since 2002.

However, Senegal have since been charged by FIFA for not sending out a player alongside manager Aliou Cisse for the press conference ahead of the Ecuador match, as is required as part of FIFA rules.

An official statement from FIFA confirmed the decision, reading: "The Fifa Disciplinary Committee has sanctioned the Senegalese Football Federation with a fine in the amount of CHF 10,000 and a warning for breaches of article 44 of the Regulations for the Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022™, article 2.7.2 of the Media and Marketing Regulations and article 8.5.3 of the Team Handbook. The potential breaches relate to the mandatory press conference that took place on 28 November ahead of the Ecuador v. Senegal Fifa World Cup™ match.”

In response, Cisse did not attend Senegal's pre-England press conference, although it was clarified that his absence is due to illness. Moreover, the Lions of Teranga ensured they fulfilled the requirement to put a player up to the press by sending third-choice goalkeeper Alfred Gomis, who hasn't even played a single club game for Rennes this season and certainly won't play against Gareth Southgate's side.

The match kicks off at 7pm UK time at Al-Bayt Stadium and the winner will face either France or Poland in the quarter-final.
