What Sean Dyche has said about Everton in the past ahead of becoming new manager

Sean Dyche is set to be announced as the new Everton manager, having seemingly beaten Marcelo Bielsa to the punch after both men held talks with the Blues hierarchy.

The former Burnley boss has been out of management since April last year but is primed to return to the Premier League and become the seventh appointment of the Farhad Moshiri era.

Dyche has vast experience in the top flight, keeping Burnley up for six consecutive seasons and leading them to a seventh placed finish in the 2017/18 campaign. He is arguably the candidate with the best record to pull the Blues out of the relegation zone and instil some discipline into the side.

MANAGER LATEST: Live updates and reaction as Sean Dyche set for Everton job

SPECIAL REPORT: Inside the 120 hours that shook Everton to the core

In the past decade Dyche has faced off with Everton on numerous occasions and come out on top on several occasions. Here are some notable comments from him about the Blues and his own approach...

Media interview - November 2022

Previously, Dyche admitted he was never in the running to take over from Carlo Ancelotti but he is now set to take over from Frank Lampard. He did speak out on his admiration for the club, though, telling talkSPORT: “Proper club, we all know that, people's club. I have a feel for that because of my history in the Premier League. But a proper club and it has a proper feel about it. I know they talk about that new stadium but it has that feel in the stadium."

His admiration for Everton’s history will bode well with the fans as he attempts to keep their record of never being relegated from the top division intact.

Burnley 3-2 Everton - April 2022

Last season the Clarets went up against the Blues in a ‘six pointer’ in a bottom of the table clash. Everton were leading 2-1 at half time until Dyche’s damning half time speech to his players. He later explained: “You sense a team doesn't know how to win a game, I said to our players that this lot don't know how to win a game away from home.” Dyche was proved right as Burnley went on to win the game 3-2.

His analysis then is not different from the reality now and the position Everton find themselves in is worse than the season before. Dyche is masterful at creating a strong bond in a team and coaxing out performances which get results.

Burnley 1-0 Everton - December 2019

A year on, a different scoreline, and the same attitude from Dyche towards the season and his players. “You learn a lot about yourself and your staff and players and the togetherness saw us through over the season. And it’s certainly there again with the will and demand. I’m enjoying the work the players are putting in." The Blues are in dire need of consistency and points and Dyche can bring both immediately. His quote is an insight to his managerial style and what he expects from his team.

Burnley 1-5 Everton - December 2018

The Clarets were outplayed by the Blues in a demolition job at Turf Moor and Dyche’s side were three points away from safety. His post-match press conference sums up his attitude towards football. “We wanted to shake it up more than we did in the summer, but that's difficult, that's always difficult here, with the finances… We've had a few injuries, but now's not the time to talk about all the things that go against you. It's about the things we can control, and we're not controlling the right things at the moment."

The current situation at Everton is that the players they have need to step up with time running out for multiple new recruits. Dyche dealt with this time and time again and usually beat the odds. It has defined his managerial career, his ability to grind out results could keep Everton in the Premier League.
