THE use of Yes on the ballot paper at the next General Election would have backing from many independence supporters, a poll has suggested.
SNP policy convener Toni Giugliano has called on leaders within the party to use the slogan “Yes to Independence” as a way of making it “clear beyond doubt” that a vote for the SNP is a vote for Scotland leaving the UK.
He told The Sunday National that he feels putting Yes on the ballot paper could galvanise support across the wider independence movement – even among those who are not necessarily SNP supporters.
An online survey carried out by The National, which attracted just over 1200 responses, found 75% agreed with idea while a quarter did not.
The results of the poll – while not scientific – suggest the idea could gain backing from the independence movement.
Giugliano said he was delighted to see widespread for the proposal, which he has suggested in a letter sent to party leaders.
"Every SNP candidate in the forthcoming General Election must stand on a ticket to deliver independence,” he said.
“This election can't be business as usual, which is why we must make it clear beyond doubt that a vote for the SNP is a vote for Scotland to become independent - and for the UK government to give democratic effect to that expression of will.
"Support for independence remains rock solid. The messages we deploy - including those that appear on the ballot papers - will be crucial in galvanising that support-base and reaching out to Yes voters beyond the SNP.”
He added: "It's time to reignite the hope and positivity of 2014 and bring the Yes movement together, because make no mistake, the cause of independence is under attack from our opponents like never before."
