What's on at Liverpool's museums this summer

When it comes to an interesting day out, you can't beat a museum.

Offering the chance to learn something new whilst enjoying plenty of fun exhibits and activities, it's an ideal choice for a summer holiday trip out with the family. Here in Liverpool, we're lucky enough to have so many incredible museums on our doorstep, all with a wide range of things to see and do.

We've put together a guide of the best things to experience at Liverpool's museums this summer, with something to suit all ages and interests. What's more, many of these museums are completely free to enter too, meaning you don't have to break the bank to have fun this summer.

World Museum Liverpool

Having opened in 1853, the World Museum is the oldest of Liverpool's museums and galleries. The museum holds approximately 80,000 artefacts from across the ancient world and reveals millions of years of the world's history.

The museum also boats an aquarium and planetarium as well as a wide range of fun hands-on exhibits. Until October 30, visitors can also explore the world of science within the thrilling universe of Doctor Who.

The Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder exhibit enables fans to engage with original artefacts and sets from the hit show, allowing them to discover the science that weaves its way through Doctor Who's history.

Although admission to the main museum is free, an entry fee is required for the special Doctor Who exhibition. Adult tickets cost £14 when booked in advance or £16 on the day. Children aged six to 17 cost £8 in advance or £10 on the day. Children aged five and under go free.

Museum of Liverpool

This waterfront museum is the perfect place to explore the city's history. Visitors can explore how the port and its people have shaped the city.

Collections span over 10,000 years of Merseyside's history ranging from social and community history to archaeology and transport. The museum's Little Liverpool exhibit is perfect for kids, offering a hands-on fantasy world for children under the age of six to learn from.

Highlights include the interactive Liverpuddles activity, which allows children to understand more about the city environment in a fun way. The Museum of Liverpool is free to enter. The Little Liverpool exhibit is also free, although a ticket is required, which can be collected from the front desk on the day of visiting.

Maritime Museum

Located at the Royal Albert Dock, the Maritime Museum offers visitors a place to learn more about Liverpool's seafaring past. The Titanic and Liverpool: the untold story exhibit allows visitors to explore Liverpool's role in the Titanic story.

The museum also offers guided Old Dock tours. Tours cost £8.50 for adults, £3 for children aged six to 17 and children aged five and under go free. Admission to the museum is free, donations are welcome.

The Beatles Story

The Beatles Story takes visitors on an immersive journey through the story of the lives, time, culture and music of the Fab Four. The museum features a collection of memorabilia including original instruments, clothing, rare album sleeves and original handwritten lyrics.

Children of all ages can enjoy a visit to the Discovery Zone, where they can learn more about the iconic band through interactive screens and a giant floor piano, as well as performing their favourite Beatles songs on the mini Cavern Club stage.

The Beatles Story hosts a range of interactive workshops, with fun craft events taking place during the summer. Entrance to The Beatles Story costs £18 for over 16s, £14 for concessions and £10 for children aged five to 15.

Opening times: Daily opening and closing times are subject to change, visitors are advised to check the online calendar before they visit. The Discovery Zone is open from 11am to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday.
