What rugby is on TV today, what time does it kick-off and how you can watch

Welsh fans seeking their weekend sporting fix will need to turn their eyes elsewhere today - mainly to events across the Severn Bridge.

While senior Welsh rugby matches and top flight football throughout the UK have been called off following news about the Queen, oval ball action will take place in England.

The English Gallagher Premiership season kicks off at 3pm when Exeter host Leicester, London Irish meet Worcester and Newcastle clash with Harlequins.

At-a-glance: What's on and what's off this weekend

At 5.30pm Bristol meet Bath in a mouthwatering west country derby opener, the game having been put back 24 hours after originally being scheduled for Friday night.

The Exeter versus Leicester clash is on BT Sport 2 and represents an early chance for Wales newcomer Tommy Reffell to put down a marker to Wayne Pivac in World Cup year. For many, the dynamic back-rower was Wales' standout performer during the summer Tests against world champions South Africa, but will he face intense competition to keep hold of the Welsh number seven jersey with Justin Tipuric returning and Jac Morgan and Taine Basham also having shone in the role.

As the man in possession, this is Reffell's chance to show to Pivac he can bring last season's stellar form into the new 2022-23 campaign and continue to shine at club and country level.

The other 3pm kick-offs are being shown on PRTV, Premiership Rugby's streaming service.

Bristol versus Bath is not being televised, having originally been pencilled in as BT Sport's showpiece opener for Friday night. Once it was postponed for a day, a decision was taken not to screen the game. Premiership Rugby have confirmed it will not be shown on their online streaming service either due to a lack of broadcast trucks and staff.

Highlights will be available online shortly after the match with a full replay on PRTV on Sunday.

The Sunday matches see Louis Rees-Zammit start for Gloucester against Wasps, a 3pm kick-off shown on BT Sport 1, and Sale clash with Northampton at the same time. That game will be on PRTV.

Northampton say Wales captain Dan Biggar has not been considered for selection for the opener.

There is also Top14 action from France, with Lyon versus La Rochelle a 2pm kick-off on Premier Sports 2.

That is followed on the same channel by Bayonne versus Racing 92 at 4pm, with Montepllier versus Bordeaux Begles at 8pm.

The first game of the day on TV is from down under, with Counties Manukau meeting Manawatu in New Zealand's National Provincial Championship. That game is being shown on Sky Sports main event with an 8.05am kick-off.

Pre-season Friday night friendlies between Scarlets and Dragons and Cardiff versus Zebre were called as 'a mark of respect to the passing of Her Majesty The Queen'.

However, mini, junior and u18s matches in Wales already scheduled to take place can go ahead, though clubs are requested to observe a period of two minutes’ silence before kick-off.

Premier League football and English Football League games scheduled for this weekend have been postponed. Cardiff City are due to return to action with an away trip to Middlesbrough on Tuesday night, with Swansea City hosting Sheffield United and James Rowberry's Newport County away to Stevenage.
