What RB Leipzig give Timo Werner that Chelsea couldn't as Thierry Henry delivers harsh verdict

When it comes to Premier League strikers, Thierry Henry is one of the best. His 175 goals is only bettered by six players. When it comes to the worst, Timo Werner is unfortunately a shoe-in for the category.

Say what you will about his Champions League win or the work he put in to help his side, 10 goals in 56 matches as a £47m signing is extremely poor. Romelu Lukaku is seen as one of the worst signings in Chelsea's history and he got eight goals in 26 last season.

Werner, who was tipped to be the top scorer in the league when he joined from RB Leipzig in 2020, only scored six goals in his debut year and went two worse with four in his second. He was finally sold for nearly half the price that Chelsea paid for him earlier this summer.

His failure was down to lots of things, a differing style in Premier League and Bundesliga football, miss-use on the pitch as he played without a needed strike-partner, poor technical ability and a lot of missed chances. He was never turned on by Chelsea fans though.

Since leaving he has started up doing what he did when he left Germany, scoring goals. With a game suited to running in behind, and doing it very fast, at that, Werner thrives with space in front of him - something he was ill-afforded during his days at Stamford Bridge.

Werner already has seven goals and four assists back at his former team and is playing with the smile on his face that was missing for too much of his time in England. That is a big part as to why he ultimately failed, according to Henry, who said: "I will call it confidence. You have players who don’t care if you put your arm around them. They will come, execute and leave."

Henry, working for CBS Sports, watched Werner pick up his first Champions League goal of the campaign in a 2-0 victory over Celtic. The former Arsenal striker explained Werner's return to form, saying: "Then you have some players that need to feel the love. They need to feel maybe that they are going to play for 90 minutes. The best example is the second goal.

"First and foremost on the first control, Timo Werner would never have put that ball down at Chelsea, and then he would never have seen [Emil] Forsberg.

"He would have rushed it trying to do something, overthinking it and overdoing it. I saw it before, he was calm before and he is calm again. Maybe he would have shot [when he brought the ball down] because people said he can’t score at Chelsea – it gives you confidence when you score again. Then I see him pass it with his left foot at the right time.

"Sometimes you go to some places, they don’t show you that love, I’m not saying he didn’t have it, but if he didn’t feel it like he felt it at Leipzig, then you aren’t going to be at your best and you won’t take the right decision."

Part of Werner's issues could have been down to the brutality of Thomas Tuchel on the touchline, but he was misfiring well before that under Frank Lampard. It was also apparent that his best runs in a Chelsea team came whilst playing against Southampton, the closest outfit to a Bundesliga set-up there is in England.

For Werner, his failure is part of a wider attacking struggle at Chelsea in-which a talented group have all disappointed over a three-year period despite having spent over £300m on players. The German forward is now at a better place for him and for Chelsea, both parties have gone their separate ways, but Werner wasn't a character that didn't get the support of fans at SW6.

He was a popular figure for his never relenting runs and energy across the field, even if some of his shots were comical and things ultimately didn't work out.
