What Ralf Rangnick said 'in detail' about his consultancy role ahead of Manchester United exit

Ralf Rangnick will play no part in the new era being formed at Manchester United after it was announced that he will be leaving the club this summer.

The 63-year-old, who was appointed as United interim manager last November, was poised to take up a consultancy role at Old Trafford and support new manager Erik ten Hag. Initially, the German did not accept the interim role at United without the assurance of an upstairs role thereafter.

However, it has now been confirmed that Rangnick wants to solely focus on matters concerning the Austrian national team. He was installed as their new head coach in April and was set to juggle both that and his role at United.

Although his time in the dugout failed to revitalise United's ambition of making progress in the short-term, the former RB Leipzig boss was not afraid to expose the truth during his time in charge. He frequently called out previous mistakes and individuals, a lot of which was much-needed.

Supporting Ten Hag, it seemed that he would provide the Dutchman with a sounding board, as they would look to try and transform the club's fortunes in tandem. Rangnick, earlier this month, admitted that he was hopeful of playing a role in helping to try and take the club back to where it belongs.

"We've [Rangnick and Ten Hag] been in contact via WhatsApp and hopefully we will have the opportunity to meet and speak in person, either at the weekend or Monday morning at the latest," Rangnick said, speaking ahead of last weekend's defeat to Crystal Palace. "I'm looking forward to speaking to him in person and getting to know him in person."

On the consultancy role, he continued: "We spoke about that in detail. About all the different areas where I could maybe be of help.

"It's not that easy or not that difficult to know in which areas this could be. I think we showed that in the last 15 years with Hoffenheim, Salzburg and Leipzig, even for clubs not as prominent as Manchester United, it's possible to identify, develop and even at one stage sell.

"I know Manchester United is not a selling club but rather a developing and buying club, but this is possible and this is what is most important, that the club finds players for whom it is the next next logical step in their career, to develop their sporting career. If that happens, I can be positive and I can hopefully be encouraging for our fans that we will bring United back to the top."
