What Rafael Leao did to convince Chelsea to complete £88m transfer amid AC Milan contract hope

Chelsea transfer target Rafael Leao has continued to show exactly why he's one of Europe's hottest attacking talents with another impressive display for AC Milan.

Leao and Milan returned to domestic action today (Wednesday) after a seven week pause for the World Cup with a 2-1 win over Salernitana in Serie A. The 23-year-old, who scored twice for Portugal in Qatar, continued where he left off with a neat finish past Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa after 10 minutes.

The forward showed blistering pace to beat Ivan Radovanovic before finishing from a tight angle to open the scoring. Leao's goal was his seventh Serie A strike of the season and second in consecutive games after netting versus Fiorentina in November.

But it wasn't just the return to the scoresheet that was impressive. As shown throughout the season in Italy, Leao's ability to cause havoc for defenders with his trickery and pace was on show yet again. In a one-on-one duel with defender Flavius Daniliuc, the Portuguese managed to squeeze out of a tight space before being fouled with a cheeky flick through the Austrian's leg.

Leao's current contract at the San Siro expires in the summer of 2024 and he has caught the attention of many with his performances for club and country. His relationship with Reece James on social media had hinted at a possible move to Stamford Bridge, but recent reports from Italy claim I Rossoneri were growing in confidence of keeping hold of their star man.

Milan have raised their proposal to a total €7million per-year (£6.1million) which will likely see him become the highest-paid player at the club. Milan manager Stefano Poli was asked about Leao's future recently, in which he advised him to remain in Italy.

He told Sky Sports, via Football Italia: "I advise him to sign a new deal and stay at Milan. I see Rafa very happy here. Leao here will have the chance to improve again, he feels good at Milan with this group."
