What happens to Camilla's Royal title?

Camilla has been the Duchess of Cornwall since her marriage to former Prince of Wales Charles in 2005. However, since the monarch has now become King, the Duchess will also make a title change.

She will not become Queen, due to the fact that the throne can only be inherited, and can't be taken on by members of the Royal Family who have been married into it. However, earlier in 2022, the late Queen Elizabeth II announced that it was most "sincere wish" that Camilla becomes the Queen consort when Prince Charles became King.

So, what does the Queen consort mean?

What does the title Queen consort mean?

In long-standing tradition, the wife of a current reigning king is given the title of Queen consort, and is crowned at the same coronation ceremony as her husband. The Royal Family website reads: "Unless decided otherwise, a Queen consort is crowned with the King, in a similar but simpler ceremony. If the new Sovereign is a Queen, her consort is not crowned or anointed at the coronation ceremony."

The role of a Queen consort is to "provide companionship and moral and practical support" to the reigning king, according to Buckingham Palace.

So while the monarch plays a constitutional role in approving bills before they become real legislation, the Queen consort does not hold any sort of position in the structure of the government.
