What national media spotted during 'mass confrontation' as Liverpool beat Newcastle

Liverpool came from behind to make it two wins on the bounce after beating Newcastle United 2-1 in a heated affair at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Newcastle's record signing, Alexander Isak, gave them the lead on his debut in the first half before Roberto Firmino equalised after the break. Substitute Fabio Carvalho smashed home in the 98th minute to send Anfield crazy.

Eddie Howe and his staff were unhappy at the amount of time added on - despite their side using delaying tactics throughout the game - and there were some ugly scenes on the touchline as Liverpool recorded their second win of the season. Plenty of national media outlets were in attendance to watch Liverpool’s last ditch win. Here is a round-up of what they had to say.

"If there has been one shining hope for Liverpool in what has been a frustrating start to the season then it has been the arrival of Fabio Carvalho, and so the 20-year-old wrote his name into Anfield history with the late, late goal that will surely fire their campaign.

"Just as it appeared Liverpool would be consigned to a draw that would have left them worryingly adrift of Arsenal and Manchester City, Carvalho, on as a substitute, hooked the ball home from the game’s last corner as it pinged around and Newcastle United desperately attempted, and failed, to clear.

"It was cruel on Newcastle, whose bench reacted angrily, but provoked wild scenes of celebrations and relief from Liverpool's fans. Given how deep into added time the goal came, Liverpool will believe it was karma for all of Newcastle’s undeniable time-wasting. The goal came in the 98th minute."

"Fabio Carvalho’s 97th-minute winner drove Newcastle to despair at Anfield and sparked a mass confrontation between the dug-outs as Liverpool sealed an unlikely comeback against Eddie Howe’s side.

"Jurgen Klopp had claimed Newcastle do not require another transfer window to become a top-six side given what they have bought so far under Saudi ownership, but there was no love lost between him and the away bench.

"As Carvalho, having hooked home at the back post after Newcastle had failed to clear one last Liverpool corner, celebrated his precious strike, the Liverpool goalkeeping coach, John Achterberg, taunted the Newcastle dugout. They erupted in kind, unsurprisingly.

"Alexander Isak, Newcastle’s new record purchase, had marked his debut with a superb strike before Liverpool finally stirred through Roberto Firmino and their young substitute."

"A melee on the touchline, bedlam in the stands and something between relief and early season ecstasy for those sprawled in red celebration on the turf. Already this feels like a huge moment in Liverpool's campaign.

"Failure to win this game would have left Liverpool seven points behind Manchester City. If Manchester United take anything at all at Leicester tonight, Jurgen Klopp's team would have been in the bottom half of the Premier League. They would have deserved to be there too, so strangely mundane has so much of their football been.

"But with 98 minutes on the clock, Liverpool substitute Fabio Carvalho scored from the underside of the bar following an almighty scramble after a corner and the home team had a victory that may yet propel them upwards. In an instant they shot from ninth to fifth position and they will head in to Saturday's Merseyside derby at Everton in better spirits."

"The clock had ticked into the 98th minute. It was so late that it felt Divock Origi territory, except there is no Origi at Anfield any more. But if there was a vacancy for a new super sub, perhaps Fabio Carvalho is filling it. His first Liverpool goal came as a replacement against Bournemouth on Saturday. His second was far more significant, ending Newcastle’s unbeaten start to the season, getting Liverpool a win when a draw beckoned, suggesting they have regained their capacity for the unlikely.

"It was taken beautifully, Carvalho celebrating his 20 th birthday the previous day by swivelling to volley in after a bout of penalty-box pinball. The ball had come via Mohamed Salah’s shoulder but the sweetest touch came from the summer signing and Liverpool, not for the first time in Klopp’s reign, proved experts in escapology. For the eighth time in nine league games they trailed. They conjured a comeback victory against a hugely impressive Newcastle side.

"In the process, Carvalho upstaged even Alexander Isak. He made a debut that brought encouragement and excitement in equal measure, as well as a first goal in black-and-white stripes. He offered early evidence of why Newcastle have spent £63 million on him. The record signing drilled them into the lead, capping a performance that showed pace, elusiveness and composure in front of goal."
