What Moussa Diaby has said about Champions League ambitions amid Arsenal transfer links

Arsenal have had a hugely successful start to the season, winning their first three Premier League games. Mikel Arteta's side currently sit top of the league and that is perhaps no surprise considering the Gunners' summer transfer business.

Edu wasted no time in getting new signings through the door and has spent in excess of £110million this summer to bring in Gabriel Jesus, Matt Turner, Marquinhos, Fabio Vieira and Oleksandr Zinchenko. With just over a week to go until the window shuts, more signings could yet be announced.

It's widely been reported that Edu is keen to bring a 'mystery winger' to north London before the September 1 deadline, with Pedro Neto, Yeremy Pino and Wilfried Zaha among the names linked with a move. Another name on Arsenal's watchlist is one of the Bundesliga's most exciting talents in Moussa Diaby.

Earlier this year, SportBILD reported that Arsenal identified Diaby as the player who could be the ideal Nicolas Pepe replacement, with the Ivorian now linked with a loan move to Ligue 1 side Nice. Diaby, 23, enjoyed a strong season last campaign, having scored 17 goals and providing 14 assists in all competitions, and would provide competition for Gabriel Martinelli, Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka should he make the move to the Emirates Stadium.

One issue though is the fact that Arsenal are playing Europa League football this campaign after missing out on Champions League qualification last season. Diaby has previously insisted he wants to play in Europe's top competition as much as possible, and with Bayer Leverkusen in the hat for Thursday's Champions League group stage draw, a move to Arsenal would mean he would instead be playing on Thursday nights.

Speaking to Agence France-Presse, via Chronicle Live, Diaby said in 2021: "[Leaving PSG] doesn't stop me from being ambitious. My objective is to play in the Champions League every year.

"That's not a given in Leverkusen, but it's something we've got to aim for. The pressure matches give me the added motivation to show what I am capable of and then aim even higher, and if I were to win titles, that would be a huge reward."

Of course, a move for Diaby could be all the more harder given his previous comments regarding his future, but as we all know, anything can happen in the last week of a transfer window.
