What Mikel Arteta did to Matt Turner after mistake in Arsenal training amid 'risky' £5m transfer

Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner has revealed what Mikel Arteta did to him after he made a mistake at London Colney. The 28-year-old has explained what training sessions are like with the Spaniard as he look to impress at the Emirates Stadium.

The United States international is yet to feature for the Gunners since joining from New England Revolution in the summer. He penned a three-year deal in north London after technical director Edu had a £4.5million bid accepted by the MLS giants.

With Bernd Leno leaving for Fulham, Turner was brought in to deputise Aaron Ramsdale between the sticks. And, life as second-choice keeper can be difficult when acclimatising to life in the Premier League - especially when competing with one of the country's leading shot-stoppers day in, day out.

In an interview with MLS’ official website, Turner detailed Arteta's exceptionally high standards and revealed what happened when he loosely gave the ball away in training. He said: "We were playing a small possession game and it was really, really tight.

"I tried to make a pass and I gave the ball away," he added. "I sort of visually got frustrated and upset and he [Arteta] just came up to me and shoved me. He was basically like: 'I don’t want to see that. I don’t like seeing that reaction. I want to see you pick yourself up and keep going.'

"I think that really set the tone for my mentality within the club and just to keep going no matter what. If you fail, that’s alright. What matters is how you react and not about the failure in itself. That was a really nice moment."

Turner continued by insisting that he is willing to put in the hard work amid his 'risky' decision to join Arsenal. He claimed that he'll use Arteta's techniques as a means to get himself 'outside of his comfort zone'.

"I know my ceiling has not yet been reached and it's going to take some hard work, obviously some risky career moves at the end of the day," the American said. "But if I want to get to where I want to get to, I need to get outside of my comfort zone a little bit and that's going to help my sharpness every single day and my approach to the game in general."
