What Met Office says as odds on UK heatwave slashed by bookmakers Coral

The odds on this June ending up as the hottest on record in the UK have been slashed by a bookmakers. Coral has also said the odds on the British summer being the hottest ever have also been cut.

However, the Met Office in its long-range UK forecast is suggesting there could be above average rainfall towards the end of the month. It says temperatures will be close to average as we head into July.

Coral has cut its odds to 1-2 (from 5-4) on this month ending as the hottest June on record in the UK. It is offering 4-5 for this summer to be the hottest since records began, while it is just evens for the UK's highest ever temperature of 38.7C being broken in 2022.

Coral's John Hill said: "The UK should be sizzling in the sun next week, and with temperatures set to continue to rise, we have slashed the odds on this month ending as a record hot June.

"The odds are even shorter on this summer being the hottest ever in the UK, while we could also see the highest ever UK temperature of 38.7C being broken," added Hill.

Coral’s weather odds

  • 1-2 Hottest June on record in the UK
  • 4-5 Hottest summer ever in the UK
  • Evens UK's highest ever temperature of 38.7C being broken in 2022

In its UK forecast, the Met Office says the UK will see showers, but spells of dry weather with patchy cloud and clear spells on Friday night while Saturday could see more mixed weather with southern and eastern parts dry and warm. Sunday could see showers and sunshine.

A dry Monday should be followed by some cloud and rain with chilly nights, especially in the South West.

Temperatures could rise to around 22C over the weekend in parts of England but will hover around highs of around 20C for much of the UK and Wales into next week.

Met Office's Long-range forecast

Tuesday, June 14 to Thursday, June 23

At the start of this period, changeable conditions with spells of rain or showers are expected in northern and western regions of the UK. The south and southeast should stay mainly dry with some lengthy sunny periods, but some rain is possible here too. Temperatures trending close to average, perhaps slightly below average in the northwest and warming up across the south.

Further into the period, the most likely scenario is a southwest-northeast split in weather patterns across the country. This would favour fine and dry weather across southern and southwestern parts of the UK, while the north, and especially the northeast, will remain cloudier and breezier with showers or spells of rain.

Towards the end of the period, the weather is likely to become more unsettled for most again.

Friday, June 24 to Friday, July 8

Approaching the end of June, there is a chance for above average rainfall for most at first. However, rainfall and temperature will likely trend closer to average as we head into July.
