What Mesut Ozil did in Istanbul Basaksehir training amid 'quit' and verbal altercation claims

Former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil is reportedly ready to retire from Football. The 2014 World Cup winner has struggled to shine in Turkey since making the switch after leaving Arsenal in 2020.

According to Turkish journalist Yakup Cinar, Mesut Özil has requested his contract at Istanbul Başakşehir to be terminated, as he has decided to ‘quit’ football. Özil did not report to training this morning & has already told his team-mates of his decision

The midfielder has managed just seven appearances in all competitions playing for Istanbul Basaksehir, who he joined in the summer. Ozil signed a one-year contract with the option for a second but it seems unlikely he will not how extend his current deal.

His time at Basaksehir comes after a turbulent spell at Fenerbache. He was excluded from first-team training before leaving as football.london understands that the decision to remove Arsenal's former No.10 came about due to the attacking midfielder being involved in a verbal altercation with interim manager Ismail Kartal in their 2-1 home win against second-placed Konyaspor. The midfielder was substituted at half-time of the match.

With Ozil being publicly excluded from the squad, he and Ozan Tufan were not be allowed to train with the first team. This led to his eventual exit.

Despite his unfortunate spell in Turkey, the former German international enjoyed an illustrious career with Schalke 04, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, and Arsenal which has earned him a place in the conversation for one of the best playmakers of his generation.
