What Mauricio Pochettino has said on Manchester United as possible Ralf Rangnick replacement

Manchester United remain interested in appointing Mauricio Pochettino this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November and United considered Pochettino as a candidate to succeed the Norwegian.

Paris Saint-Germain held firm and refused to entertain the idea of Pochettino leaving the club during the season and United moved to appoint interim boss Ralf Rangnick instead, who will be in charge of United until the end of the campaign.

Rangnick is facing the challenge of securing Champions League football with United after a tumultuous season. The importance of a top-four finish in the Premier League can't be understated. United need it to attract the best managers and signings.

Pochettino falls within that bracket and he could soon become United's newest boss in the summer.

But what has he said on United throughout his career? The MEN have taken a closer look.

After United sacked Solskjaer in November, Pochettino was asked about the Reds' interest in appointing him as manager. The PSG boss didn't give much away with his answers: "I’m fine in Paris. I know the city well both as a player and as a coach," he said.

"I’ve always experienced these kinds of situations. Things happen and it’s not my responsibility. What I’m going to say if you ask me I am happy in Paris. I’m not a kid. I’m not a child. We are in football – it’s a business where the rumours are there.

"I completely understand what’s going on. Sometimes in a positive way or a negative way. This type of thing cannot distract. Rumours are there. We need to live with that. We are so focused. I am so happy at Paris Saint-Germain.

"For tomorrow we are so focused on getting the best result we can. We cannot talk about that [United interest] because of my respect towards my club.

"What another club is doing in this moment is not my business I’m not going to make the mistake to talk as we know everything we say will be taken out of context and misunderstood."

Pochettino was coy with his answers. The 49-year-old is familiar with United, having coached Southampton and Tottenham in the Premier League and he was also supportive of Jose Mourinho, when he was at the helm at Old Trafford, in 2017.

“Definitely, whenever one starts a new project, it requires time," Pochettino said.

"In this case, even though Jose is one of the best coaches in the world, he needs more time to put his ideas in place and so that the team can function as he wants them to. It is too early to pass judgment regarding things that are happening with the teams just yet.”

Pochettino coached Shaw at Southampton and he also spoke about United in regards to the left-back in 2017. "I do hope that I can play for him again one day," Shaw admitted five years ago and Pochettino responded with peculiar comments.

“The book is the book and you need to put the feelings in context," Pochettino said.

"It happened with me, when I was a young player. You enjoy time with some people, you always regret that. But that only explains a feeling that was in the past. For me, I think maybe you like to speak about that because you’re very surprised about the book.

“It’s difficult to find another book, to read all and try to be honest and explain everything and not lie. That’s so important.”

Could Shaw have another chapter to write with Pochettino? It's definitely possible this summer.
