What Manchester United think about Alvaro Fernandez after making Preston North End loan debut

Preston's Robbie Brady has claimed his friends at Manchester United have been singing the praises of Alvaro Fernandez.

Fernandez, 19, signed for Preston on a season-long loan last month. Fernandez had attracted plenty of interest this summer and it's understood Preston managed to sign the youngster ahead of other clubs in the Championship and Premier League.

Preston's development plan for Fernandez played a key role in the deal. The left-back made 32 appearances for United's U23s last season and he's been brought to Preston to challenge Brady at left wing-back, which is a position he is comfortable playing.

Preston have played Wigan and Hull in the Championship to date and Fernandez has been used from the bench in both games. Fernandez played 40 minutes across those fixtures and he's expected to start against Huddersfield in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

Brady, who is a product of the Reds' academy himself and is now competing with Fernandez to start at Preston, recently told the Lancashire Post that his friends who are still at United have spoken very highly of the youngster.

“I know what it's like as a young lad coming in on loan but you can definitely see his qualities, he's a great player," Brady said. "He had a good season last year at Man United, I have some friends still there that I speak to and they've been singing his praises as well.

"It's good to have that competition. We'll be fighting for the same spot the majority of the time. It'll help, it'll benefit me and it'll definitely benefit him as well to push on. If there's anything I can help him with along the way I would be more than happy to do that.

"He's a good kid. I've played the majority of positions, I'd be happy playing the majority of positions on the park whether that's the left side, right side, anywhere. We'll see how the next few weeks pan out but it's exciting and we've got some players fighting."
