What managers and pundits have said about Newcastle United target Callum Hudson-Odoi

Callum Hudson-Odoi continues to be linked with a move to Newcastle United. Chronicle Live understands that the Magpies have confirmed their interest in the Chelsea winger, but they face competition from the likes of Southampton and Leicester City for his services.

Ideally, Chelsea would like to loan out Hudson-Odoi for the season, and St James' Park could be the perfect location.

Here's a look at what managers and pundits have said about Hudson-Odoi in the past.

Thomas Tuchel

Plenty of managers, players and pundits have praised Hudson Odoi's undoubted ability, although Tuchel was impressed with his attitude after being taken off against Southampton last February, despite only coming on as a second-half substitute.

Tuchel said: “Was it the right decision? I don’t know but it was my decision in this moment. For us in the group, we spoke as a whole group to not make it bigger than it is because for us it was not a big thing.

“He went back to normal mood, to a good mood, to a smile, to training and the next day very, very good training and today. And that’s it."

Frank Lampard

“He is still a developing player to a degree," former Chelsea boss Lampard told BT Sport after Hudson-Odoi scored in a 2-1 win at Rennes.

"(For his goal) the bit of quality he shows with the first two touches before he gets the shot away is top class, I know he can do that.

“There are loads of great things about Callum and there are things he can improve in his game, and he knows that. He’s a big player for Chelsea, he’s (got) a big future with us. I’m delighted for him, his all round game today on and off the ball was fantastic and he gets his goal.”

Maurizio Sarri

In January 2019, then-Chelsea boss Sarri spoke about Hudson Odoi's potential. He said: "He is a very good player, the potential is for becoming a great player, and now he has to improve.

“He has to improve in movement without the ball. As a winger, he has to improve in the defensive phase, but he has the potential to become a very important player, not only for English football I think, but for European football.

“It’s not easy at this level to take the young players from the academy and he’s ready to play, not only here, everywhere in Europe."

Gareth Southgate

Upon calling him up to the England squad, Southgate said: "He’s a young player, so he’s still learning and improving, but already in the games he has played, we can see his level.

“He’s pushing. He’s pushing those other wide players that I talked about to start in the team,"

Rio Ferdinand

"This is what we have been waiting for," Ferdinand said after Hudson-Odoi claimed an assist in Chelsea's 1-0 win over Malmo last November.

"We have heard about Callum since he came through the ranks at Chelsea but he hasn't quite lit it up for Chelsea. But if he keeps doing this he will live up to the hype."

Joe Cole

Also after Hudson-Odoi's performance against Malmo, Cole said: "He has added more to his game under Tuchel. He is a valuable player for Chelsea."

Gary Lineker

It was after Hudson-Odoi's display in a 1-0 win over Newcastle in October 2019 when Match of the Day host Lineker took to Twitter to praise the winger.

He posted: "Goodness me. @calteck10 can play. Helluva talent."

Owen Hargreaves

"His end product for an 18-year-old is exceptional, remarkable," said Hargreaves after Hudson-Odoi scored in a 5-0 win at Dynamo Kyiv in 2019.

"If he’s got to go somewhere else then so be it. But I’d prefer it if he could get his minutes at Chelsea.

"We need to see how he copes with a bad spell and how he comes out at the end of it. I think he’s a fantastic prospect."
