What Makes Paleros in Greece a Great Family Holiday Destination?

closed blue gate Greek Cottage

Paleros (also known as Palairos) is a charming coastal town on mainland Greece’s western shore where you’ll find everything needed for a memorable family getaway. The town offers space to unwind while keeping things interesting with activities that both adults and children can enjoy.

If you’re looking for family activity holidays with a mix of relaxation and adventure, Paleros has it all without the crowds of busier tourist spots.

Stunning beaches

The area boasts some of the most picturesque and family-friendly beaches in the region. Unlike the more developed holiday hubs, its shores remain unspoiled with crystal-clear waters and soft sand, perfect for young feet.

Vathiavali Beach is just a short drive from the town and is a local favourite. Its calm, shallow waters allow children to splash safely while you relax under the shade of a parasol. For a more secluded experience, Pogonia Beach, nestled between olive groves and the Ionian Sea, offers a peaceful retreat away from the buzz of busier areas.

Many beaches also offer paddleboarding, snorkelling and gentle kayaking routes that let you explore the coastline at your own pace.

Family activities

Beyond the beaches, Paleros provides a variety of activities to keep everyone entertained. If your children have energy to burn, the surrounding hills and olive groves offer gentle hiking trails with spectacular views over the Ionian Sea.

There are multiple castles and ruins in the area, including The Castle of St George. A climb up to the ruins rewards you with panoramic scenery and a sense of adventure.

For a relaxed day out, Paleros Marina is the perfect spot to watch the boats glide in and out while enjoying an ice cream from a nearby café. Many of the restaurants along the waterfront welcome families, offering menus with fresh seafood, homemade Greek dishes and plenty of options for picky eaters too!

Island-hopping adventures

With its prime location on the Ionian coast, Paleros makes a fantastic base for exploring nearby islands. Tour operators offer boat trips to the nearby islands of Kastos, Meganisi and Kalamos, where you’ll find pebble beaches and harbourside cafes. The trips often include stops for swimming and lunch at a waterfront taverna, where you can sample local dishes.

Cultural experiences

While Paleros is best known for its natural beauty, it also offers a chance to connect with Greek history and culture in a way that’s engaging for all ages. The nearby town of Vonitsa, under a 20-minute drive away, features a Venetian castle perched on a hill, with stunning views and plenty of space for children to roam.

Practical tips

Getting to Paleros is straightforward, with Preveza Airport just 30 minutes away by car. Hiring a vehicle is the best way to explore the surrounding areas, especially if you want to visit the more secluded beaches and historic sites, but remember to check the rules of driving abroad.

The summer months bring the best beach weather, but if you prefer a quieter experience, May and September offer warm temperatures and fewer visitors. Accommodation options range from beachfront apartments to private villas with pools, many of which cater specifically to families.
