'Keeping countertops clear and investing in smart kitchen storage solutions instantly elevates the look,' Westchester-based designer Nina Lichtenstein states. 'Built-in shelves, pull-out cabinets, or magnetic knife racks help maintain a clean, organized appearance.'

Don't get us wrong, color and pattern can work wonders in kitchens, and we are big fans of the enduring dopamine decor trend. Being mindful of mixing and matching is advised, though, as a small kitchen can easily become overwhelmed by a variety of designs.
'Stick to a neutral or monochromatic kitchen color scheme with strategic pops of color,' Nina suggests. 'Light shades like whites, creams, or soft grays create an airy feel, while a touch of matte black or brushed brass adds contrast and character.'

4. Oversize hardware or fixtures

'An undermount sink provides a seamless look, while minimalistic kitchen hardware, such as brushed nickel or matte black, adds an elevated finish,' Nina states. 'Avoid overly ornate options to maintain a modern feel.'
5. Poor lighting
No one wants to spend time in a space with harsh overhead lighting, so in a small kitchen, it is especially pertinent to avoid austere illumination. Nina recommends adding kitchen lighting underneath surfaces rather than above them to make the room feel softer and more inviting.
'Layered lighting is essential for a high-end look,' she tells us. 'Under-cabinet LED lighting, a statement pendant over a small island, or recessed lights create warmth and sophistication. Avoid harsh, overly cool-toned bulbs.'
