What Liverpool need to do to win Premier League title after Man City drop points

Just when you thought it was all over, it isn't quite, as Liverpool's pursuit of the Premier League title and the improbable quadruple is kept alive by Manchester City's 2-2 draw with West Ham United.

With the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in the Anfield trophy cabinet already and a Champions League final in Paris booked for the end of the month, a cup treble is a distinct possibility, but even the most optimistic Kopite had surely almost given up hope of securing the Premier League title as well.

But David Moyes' Hammers had other ideas and by drawing with the Sky Blues today, they have pushed ajar a door for the Reds that had seemingly been slammed shut.

FA CUP WIN: Leave your message of congratulations for Klopp and the players

If Jurgen Klopp's mentality monsters are to finish the season with a 20th league title, first they will (almost certainly) need to beat Southampton on Tuesday evening to get themselves a point behind City. A defeat at Saints for Liverpool would mean City are champions. A draw would take it to the final day - but would see an unlikely scenario of City needing to lose at home to Aston Villa, with Liverpool racking up a big win against Wolverhampton Wanderers to overturn the goal difference (currently +7 in City's favour).

If Liverpool beat Saints, then on the final day of the season, the Reds must beat Wolves at Anfield and hope that Man City fail to beat Aston Villa at home. Should Liverpool win and City lose or draw, the title would be heading to Anfield.

But what happens if Liverpool win on the south coast, City lose to Villa and the Reds only draw with Wolves? Or indeed if there is a draw at Saints, with City then losing to Villa and Liverpool beating Wolves? First of all, goal difference could decide it. And that is hugely in City's favour at present.

But after the final day matches both sides are level on points AND goal difference, according to Premier League rules: “If clubs still cannot be separated, the team who scored the most goals away from home in the head-to-head matches will get the highest position. Only if the clubs remain level in the table after this will a playoff be arranged, at a neutral ground, with the format, timing and venue being determined by the Premier League Board.”

In the event of a tie in the table, the Premier League's away goals rule will be immaterial as both sides scored twice away from home in 2-2 draws at Anfield and the Etihad Stadium. A play-off game could therefore be needed if Liverpool and City end up level on points, goal difference, goals scored and goals conceded.

Should the title race go all the way to a play-off decider, it will the best first time in the history of top-flight English football that the title has been settled in such a manner. That seems unlikely given the margin of goal difference Liverpool currently need to turn around. But stranger things have happened...
