What life is like in the shadow of new retail park in West Bridgford

People living next to Nottingham's newest retail park have shared their thoughts on the huge development being built on their doorstep.

Finishing touches are being made to a new Lidl supermarket just off Wilford Lane and a Dunkin' Donuts and Pure Gym are also planned for the area.

The £20m Wilford Lane Retail Park project is located between Becket School and Wilford Lane.

Plans have also been submitted for a new Aldi supermarket and a seven-storey block of apartments.

Residents in nearby Leigh Close have differing views on whether the retail park will improve their lives - with some sharing concerns about how things will change once its fully open.

David Parsons, 66, says he feels the project is "not going to make our lives better".

"It's a retail park in a residential area," he said.

"And next to a school, which is not ideal. One of the main problems is it's going to result in a lot more traffic.

"It's also getting rid of an area of green space, which are in short supply and should be protected. It's not adding anything to the area, in my opinion.

"They also want to build some retirement apartments, which would add even more traffic. I don't understand why Lidl and Aldi, two supermarkets with a very similar business model and customer base, should move within a cricket's throw of each other.

"It's not going to make our lives better. They are playing with people's lives. It really is ridiculous."

Meanwhile David Ballantine, 60, who is retired, said: "The traffic on Wilford Lane has always been quite bad.

"I've lived here for over 20 years and in the last ten years or so it has become horrendous.

"What I am worried about is the seven storey apartment block they want to build, which would be totally out of character with this area.

"If that gets built, then parking and traffic would be a nightmare. It would be a money making exercise."

Wilford Lane is used by traffic heading to Clifton Bridge or the M1, as well as motorists wanting to access Trent Bridge or the City Ground heading in the other direction.

One Leigh Close resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told Nottinghamshire Live: "I think it will good for the area.

"My kids go to West Bridgford school and they will definitely use the Lidl and the Dunkin' Donuts. They are delighted.

"It provides more local services, more jobs - traffic is the only thing of concern. It's always very busy on that road."
