What is the Mayr Method? Rebel Wilson says weight loss was 'never' down to popular diet

Rebel Wilson has denied claims she used a specific popular diet for her incredible weight loss transformation.

For her 'year of health', Rebel said she was not put onto the Mayr Method diet plan to shed the five stone she lost.

The Pitch Perfect star was forced to take to Instagram after articles said she had used the plan. Reports claimed Rebel had undergone a specific diet, which involves developing certain eating practices, but this was false.

On Instagram, Rebel wrote: "This was NEVER my diet. Please stop writing this stuff."

In a follow-up post, she said: "Also have NEVER endorsed any diet pills or magic weight loss pills or crypto currency. If you see stuff like this online please do report it as a scam."

What is the Mayr Method diet?

The Mayr Method diet is a set of principles for people to adopt when eating, such as never eating after 7pm and eating slowly.

The diet's key principles include:

  • Eat slowly, allowing you to enjoy your food and giving your digestive system an easier job
  • Stop eating once you feel full
  • Only drink water between meals, not when you are eating

  • Your biggest meal should be at the start of the day. Eat less at lunch, followed by less than that at tea time
  • Have dinner before 7pm and avoid eating any later
  • Any raw food should be eaten before 3pm. Eat cooked food after this
  • Don't eat anything you are uncomfortable with

It has been around for roughly 100 years and was developed by Austrian physician Dr Franz Xaver Mayr in the 1920s.

Dietician at Myprotein Claire Muszalski told GoodTo: "His primary focus was on digestive health, and the diet is designed around gut health, mindfulness, timing, and limiting certain foods for weight loss."

Despite its popularity, it was not used by Rebel Wilson for her major weight loss programme.

Does the Mayr Method work?

The Mayr Method is specifically designed for people to follow over a 14-day period and some experts are sceptical about it.

Expert dietician Victoria Seaver told Eating Well: "Any diet that has lots of rules and puts restrictions on what, when and how much you eat raises major red flags. Diets like this are hard to follow, so when someone eventually stops, they tend to gain some or all of the weight back that they lost."

Whether the diet works or not, some advice suggests that it can be avoided when a person wants to follow a weight loss programme.

In its review of the diet, Healthline said: "Although it encourages eating many nutritious foods and promotes mindfulness, it also eliminates several healthy food groups and may not be suitable for those with a history of disordered eating."

They added: "Incorporating some key concepts of the plan — like practicing mindfulness and reducing your intake of processed foods and added sugar — into a healthy, well-rounded diet may be a better approach for long-term, sustainable weight loss."
