By now, most hardcore fans of the Boston Celtics have heard of the unique defensive strategy used by backup big man Luke Kornet to contest perimeter shots with the Celtics this season. Dubbed the “Kornet Kontest” and even the “Korntest” by appreciative fans and skeptical analysts, it has produced some positive early returns this season even while leaving the Vanderbilt alumnus out of position to rebound the miss (at least, when they miss, anyway).
How does it work? What are the advantages of using it? Are there other downsides than simply not being in the right place as a big man in conventional defensive coverages to consider?
NBC Sports Boston broadcaster and Celtics champion alumnus Brian “White Mamba” Scalabrine recently took some time to break down what the “Kornet Kontest” actually is and why it can actually help sometimes in a recent video.
Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what Scal has to say about Kornet’s atypical defensive strategy.
