What is Rishi Sunak's red bracelet, as he is spotted wearing one during the Covid inquiry?

While giving evidence to the Covid inquiry investigation, Rishi Sunak expressed his "deepest apologies" to the families of those who lost loved ones to Covid-19.

The Prime Minister is being questioned extensively on his handling of the pandemic, particularly on the allegations that his Eat Out to Help Out initiative aided in the spread of coronavirus.

Interest in a particular accessory Mr Sunak is wearing grew among viewers, with many curious as to why he wore it.

So what is its significance?

Why does Rishi Sunak wear a red bracelet?

Journalist Aina Khan, of the Guardian, claims that string bracelets are "traditionally worn by Hindus for protection".

A kautuka is traditionally thought to offer protection to the wearer and is often made of woven thread, string, or ribbon.

Typically, a priest or the eldest family member ties it on during a Hindu yajna ritual, which is a rite of passage. Men wear it on their right wrist, and women wear it on their left.

Other Hindu family and marriage rituals also incorporate the red thread. For instance, in a Hindu marriage, it is tied to both the bride and the groom to represent the marriage bond.

What has Sunak said about his faith?

Mr Sunak has always been vocal about his faith and Indian ancestry.

During a trip to the University of Cambridge over the summer, where Indian spiritual leader Morari Bapu was conducting a nine-day Ram Katha recital, Sunak said: “I am proud that a golden Ganesh sits gleefully on my desk at 10 Downing Street,” adding, “faith gives me courage, strength and resilience to do the best that I can for our country.”

He said he has been “overwhelmed by the love and support of the British people".

At his meeting with King Charles III last year, when the King formally named him the new prime minister, he said he "was proud" to be a Hindu and was first spotted wearing a kautuka.

What other bracelets has Rishi Sunak worn?

Mr Sunak has a reputation for donning various bracelets. One such item is a charm bracelet featuring the initials "DADA", which he wore during the Conservative Party leadership contests.

This was reportedly an item that his daughters Anoushka and Krishna fashioned for him.

Another type of bracelet he has worn is a rakhi, which is tied onto brothers by their sisters during the Raksha Bandhan festival.

The rakhi, which is a symbol of the connections between siblings and is made of intertwined crimson and gold threads, is used to commemorate brotherhood and love.

Out of his three siblings, Mr Sunak is the oldest. His sister, Raakhi, is the chief of strategy and planning at Education Cannot Wait, an international fund for education run by the United Nations, and his brother, Sanjay, is a psychologist.
