What is Mean Girls Day and when is it celebrated?

Mean Girls has become a millennial cult classic since its release twenty years ago. Quotes from the teen film, including “She doesn’t even go here!” and “That is so fetch”, have become a part of a generation’s vocabulary, and the film’s characters have provided a go-to source of Halloween costume inspiration.

Featuring a star-studded cast including Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Tina Fey, to name a few, the 2004 film’s impact is still felt strongly today, especially when it’s time to celebrate Mean Girls Day.

What and when is Mean Girls Day?

Started by fans on social media, Mean Girls Day falls on October 3. Its origins come from a scene in the film where Cady (Lohan) recounts the times she interacts with her crush, Aaron Samuels (played by Jonathan Bennett). Excited by any opportunity to speak to him, she tells viewers: “On October 3, he asked me what day it was,” before responding to Aaron: “It’s October 3.”

Although it’s only a small scene in the film, the date has stuck with fans, with some going as far as to wear pink to mark the occasion, which is part of ‘The Plastics’ weekly dress code.

Last year, Lohan, Seyfried and Chabert reunited for a special Mean Girls advertisement for Walmart’s Black Friday campaign. McAdams was noticeably absent, telling Variety: “I guess I wasn’t that excited about doing a commercial if I’m being totally honest.”

Although a sequel with the original cast may not be on the cards, fans of Mean Girls can, at the time of writing, purchase tickets to see the musical adaptation of the film on London’s West End. A film based on the musical starring Reneé Rapp was released earlier this year.
