I have a new enemy in Destiny 2. It’s not a scheming Hive witch or a haughty Awoken queen. It’s a weapon, a void sword called The Other Half that was introduced in Destiny 2’s 30th Anniversary Event. Allegedly.
Despite followers spamming their own copies of the sword in my timeline, I know that I’m not alone in failing to get even one copy of the The Other Half. Instead, I have roughly three dozen copies of Half-Truths, its arc counterpart, and many players have not seen it at all, despite scores of Dares of Eternity runs.
What is going on here? Why is this sword so rare? What is Bungie hiding?
I was formulating pieces of a grand conspiracy theory about this:
- Bungie never has made one “pool” legendary weapon like this 20x more rare than any other weapon, which is weird.
- The two halves of both swords make one complete Halo-looking energy sword.
- There is some sort of classified sword listing in the API, and the idea was that it was a rare half leading to some sort of secret combination blade, an exotic that maybe could switch elements or something like that. After all, the 30th Anniversary did promise some mysteries to solve, and we really haven’t seen too many of those yet.
But…Bungie swears there’s no secret here. After complaining about the void sword on Twitter as usual, community manger DMG confirmed that the rarity is just for fun, and they’re not actually hiding anything about the sword:
30th Anniversary designer Tom Farnsworth also previously confirmed it was purposefully rare, and this may be a new experiment Bungie is doing with ultra-rare legendary weapons, making them rare just for its own sake.
As frustrated as I currently am, I do sort of like the idea of “shiny” weapons like this. Like for every 30 copies of one drop you get, there’s 1 that’s a different element and a different color. People go nuts for that in Pokémon, so why couldn’t something similar work in Destiny?
In this case, The Other Half is a straight up better version of Half-Truths, because it has the Halo lunge perk Eager Edge in the left slot, leaving the right slot open for actual damage perks. Though at this point, it’s so unbelievably rare, that you cannot really farm for the exact roll you want. At this point, I’m quitting Dares when I get a single copy, just to have it. It’s like trying to find a shiny Pokémon that is also a 100% stats winner.
At this point I…am starting to get tilted. I have 116 chests opened at this point. I have cleared every cosmetic in the treasure room and have spent every other key on weapons. Still missing The Other Half (and still missing a Demolitionist/Adrenaline Junkie battle rifle, but that’s just your usual roll hunting luck).
I am not opposed to more things like this in the future, as lord knows it’s getting me to continue to grind past when I normally would have stopped. But it better drop soon or the articles will continue until morale improves. My morale.
