What is Go Sober for October? How to take part in the Macmillan challenge

Sober October, a movement organised by Macmillan Cancer Support, encourages Brits to ditch alcohol for a month while raising money for a good cause.

Due to start on October 1, those signing up for the monthly challenge have just a few more days to ready themselves for going alcohol-free.

Not only will Sober October help raise funds for a good cause, but it’s also designed to help people reap the benefits of an alcohol-free month.

According to Macmillan: “Giving up the booze for a month comes with loads of feel-good benefits, but the feeling of raising vital funds for the millions of people with cancer in the UK is the best feeling of all.”

How can I get involved with the Macmillan challenge?

Much like dry January, sober October is a widely recognised term that is used when people choose to quit alcohol for 31 days in October.

Macmillian is also using this month to help raise money for a good cause. Aimed at social drinkers over the age of 18, the charity is asking people to take part in Sober October while raising money for people with cancer and making some healthy changes to their lifestyle.

According to their website, the money raised will be used to give physical, financial, and emotional support to cancer sufferers and their families across the UK. What’s more, those taking part can also enjoy improved health, weight loss, better sleep, and more energy by ditching alcohol.

Getting involved with the project is simple, all you need to do is sign up for the challenge and ask your friends to make a donation for you to keep it up.

According to the Macmillan website, more than 21,440 ‘soberheroes’ have already signed up to take part, raising an impressive £293,087 before the month has even started.

The cancer charity has also set up a leaderboard so people can keep track of their fundraising and support others who are also going dry this October.
