"What is double-engine govt doing..."?: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Manipur violence

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Manipur violence

New Delhi: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday asked what the 'double government' BJP government in Manipur was doing with respect to the violence in the state.

"Union Minister Amit Shah set up a peace committee- how many meetings did it have? Manipur's Department of Home has registered an FIR against the Assam Rifles. The Assam Rifles is under Amit Shah. What double-engine govt is working?..." Gogoi said today.

Further, the Congress MP added, "I have come to know that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will speak in the Parliament today and my question to him is- When he went to Manipur, a committee of retired chief justices of HC was set up, what work has the committee done so far?"

On Tuesday, Gogoi had begun the discussions after the Congress party tabled the motion of no confidence in the Lower House on Tuesday.

The Congress said that it was forced to move the motion against the government in order to break PM Narendra Modi’s “maun vrat” (vow of silence) on Manipur.

Slamming the government, Gogoi said in Lok Sabha that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has to accept that his double-engine government in Manipur has failed.

"PM will have to accept that his double-engine government, his government in Manipur has failed. That is why 150 people died in Manipur, around 5000 houses were torched, around 60,000 people are in relief camps and around 6500 FIRs have been registered," Gogoi said.

On the other hand, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Nishikant Dubey, initiating his party’s debate on the no-confidence motion in the lower house, took a jibe at Sonia Gandhi and also hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

"This no-confidence motion has been brought. Why has this been brought up? Sonia ji (Gandhi) is sitting here...I think she has to do two things - "Bete (son) ko set karna hai aur Damad (son-in-law) ko bhent karna hai" (She wants to set his son [Rahul Gandhi] and wants to gift his son-in-law). ...That is the base of this motion," Dubey said.

Notably, the discussion on the no-confidence motion for the second day is all set to begin today. (ANI)
