What is BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker doing next?

BBC Breakfast viewers tuned in on Tuesday morning to see news anchor Dan Walker make his final appearance on the programme. The 45-year-old newsreader said it was a "massive decision" to leave the BBC One show when he made the announcement back in April.

The news came as a shock to regular viewers of the programme as Dan's co-host Louise Minchin had only left her role in September 2021. Dan has since been co-hosting alongside Sally Nugent, however after six years on BBC Breakfast he revealed Channel 5 came to him with "big ambitions" and he "can't wait".

During his final appearance on BBC Breakfast on Tuesday, May 17, Dan made a heartfelt speech to viewers and his colleagues who surrounded him on the sofa. "I've had so many incredible memories of working on this programme," he said: "It's been a real privilege to sit here and present this programme which we all know means an awful lot to so many people who watch".

Dan's replacement on BBC Breakfast hasn't been revealed just yet, but many fans are already wondering if they will be able to see the TV presenter on their screens again soon and if so where he is moving to. Here are all the details:

What is BBC Breakfast's Dan Walker doing next?

The TV presenter has already confirmed he will be moving over to Channel 5, where he will host 5 News, replacing Sian Williams - who announced in March she would be stepping down. Dan will also be working alongside Claudia-Liza Vanderpuije on the recently re-launched hour-long 5pm bulletin.

Alongside his new 5 News presenting role, Channel 5 revealed Dan will also be fronting " a range of brand-new non-news programming" for the channel. A clip of Dan talking about his move to Channel 5 was released on Twitter on April 4.

"Hello, Dan Walker here, I have a little bit of news for you," he said: "In the next few weeks I'm going to be leaving BBC Breakfast and moving to 5 News and to Channel 5. I'm really excited but this has also been a massive decision for me because I love Breakfast. I love working alongside Sally and I love the team there.

"But Channel 5 came with big ambitions, with big plans and I don't think opportunities like this come around very often and I can't wait. I've also had the incredibly privilege of working on some iconic programmes over the last few years, both at the BBC and elsewhere and what I love about this deal is I not only get to present the news, but also host a whole range of new programmes right across the channel."

BBC Breakfast airs Monday to Saturday from 6am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
