'What I can say' - Bruno Guimaraes makes Liverpool admission after Newcastle defeat

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes admits his side 'did not deserve' to beat Liverpool this afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp 's side edged past their opponents 1-0 at St James' Park to go top of the table, albeit temporarily. Naby Keita's first half goal proved to be enough as the Reds navigated a difficult fixture.

Newcastle were in fine form heading into the game with four wins on the bounce. Eddie Howe has done a remarkable job since taking charge in November last year, steering them clear of danger and close the top half of the table.

Guimaraes believes his side did not do enough against the Merseyside club and says Liverpool are on 'another level'.

He told Chronicle Live : "It was a difficult game, we know Liverpool are on another level. But we tried our best. In my opinion we expected a lot more. We did not play well with the ball, it was difficult.

"What I can say to you was that Liverpool were another level. We have to work to get to that level. We have to work more and try to play with more of the ball. We have to try to work with the space and get in behind, we didn't do it.

"We did not deserve the win today."

Manager Howe also admitted his team 'lacked the quality' needed to get a result against an in-form Liverpool side. He said after the game: "I think Liverpool were probably not at their best but we weren’t either and when you play these games you have to be. We competed well but lacked the quality that could have got us a goal."

Liverpool now sit two points clear of rivals Manchester City at the top of the table, before Pep Guardiola's side face Leeds United later this afternoon. The result also gives them a positive boost heading into Tuesday night's Champions League semi-final second leg against Villarreal.
